Growing up on the family farm in the Karoo in Southern Africa enabled him to enjoy and become aware of the outdoor animal wildlife, and the need for conservation. Roy served time in the South African military (mandatory) for two years. Roy was located on the border of Angola serving in the 44th parachute battalion for his country.Roy then attended Pretoria Technicon school of the arts for three years.
